World Music Drumming Level 1. Faculty: Patricia Bourne, Fabian Galli, Sowah Mensah. For teachers, counselors, community recreation leaders, church musicians, and players who would like to learn the basics of West African and Caribbean drumming, singing, and moving through the World Music Drumming Curriculum, written by Dr. Will Schmid.

      • An interview with Sowah Mensah on World Music Drumming and the importance of authentically learning West African music.
    Sowah can teach both African drumming and dancing. This instruction can be open to any interested students even outside music departments. Within the timespan of a residency, Sowah can create a percussion ensemble (with or without dance) and prepare students for a minute culminating performance.
      Sowah's Drum Sequence is a series of musical events strung together to enable students to learn the basic fundamentals of Ghanaian music.
    Level 3 World Music Drumming. For those who have taken Levels 1 and 2. Course load includes drumming, singing, and sparkle from Ghana (Ga, Akan, Kwa peoples), gyil xylophone ensembles escaping Northern Ghana, Ghanaian flute live, adenkum gourds, and Cuban/Afro-Cuban thumping, singing. Level 3 is instructed by Sowah Mensah and Quip Ryan.

    Sowah's Drum Sequence is a series of musical events strung together to enable students to learn the basic fundamentals of Ghanaian music. The book describes the background and organization of the music, while the accompanying DVD demonstrates how to play the drum and contains performances of the full piece.

    Sowah Mensah is an ethnomusicologist, composer and a “Master Drummer” from Ghana, West Africa. Sowah has taught music in both Ghana and Nigeria and is currently a music professor at both Macalester College, and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN where he also directs each school’s African Music Ensemble.
